The Inoyama Donation: A Tale of Two Artists

The Inoyama Donation : A Tale of Two Artists

27 Feb - 12 Apr 2006

SAM Galleries 2.7

Indonesian artist Heri Dono and local artist Wong Shih Yaw are two artists at the forefront of contemporary art practice within Southeast Asia. Their works grapple with issues such as tradition, religion, social order, craft and performance. Featuring a group of 16 works by Heri Dono and 11 works by Wong Shih Yaw, this exhibition presents a compelling picture of what it means to be a contemporary artist today.

This exhibition commemorates the series of donations of some 34 works made by the collector Mr Yuji Inoyama to the museum between 2002 and 2003. The works featured in the exhibition are drawn from these donations.

"Contemporary art forces upon us a new mirror - To one picture there are many experiences, to one event there are many interpretations, to one life, there are many possibilities. The human experience draws from many wells. The arts gives us access to the deepest of those wells. Thank you Mr Inoyama for helping keep the well watered." -- Ms Jane Ittogi Shanmugaratnam, Partner of Shook Lin and Bok
