Art of Our Time
9 April 2005 - 2008
SAM Galleries 1.1 - 1.4 & 2.1 - 2.4

The Singapore Art Museum (SAM) has been actively collecting Southeast Asian Modern and Contemporary Art since 1993. Today, the Collection has grown to be the world's largest public collection, and through a series of exhibitions inaugurating in April next year, key works are presented within an art historical context to highlight developments in visual arts in the region. SAM's Permanent Collection Exhibition will feature close to 100 artworks that highlights significant artists from Singapore and the region.

The Singapore component, "Unyielding Passion: 8 Masters of Singapore Art" will showcase a selection that serves to tell the development of Singapore art from the early 20th century to present day. Intertwined with Singapore's own history and the global developments, these artworks reflect the achievements of early pioneers such as Liu Kang and Georgette Chen, as well as the dynamic vigour of contemporary artists like Tan Swie Hian and Iskandar Jalil.

The Southeast Asian component, "Of Tides and Times: Encounters with Southeast Asian Art" will explore the region's art through themes that range from nation-building, social commentary and notions of identity. It brings together a constellation of renowned figures such as Indonesian artists Affandi and Hendra Gunawan, and more recent names like Thai artists Montien Boonma and Chatchai Puipia who have drawn critical international acclaim.
