Diobok-Obok: Continuities and Contingencies, Southeast Asian Art Today

Diobok-Obok focused on contemporary Southeast Asian artist's engagement with important issues which touch on questions of who we are as peoples within the region, and what is the nature of art making in our contemporary times. Curated to tour international museum venues in year 2000, this is the first ASEAN project to showcase Southeast Asian artworks outside the region.

Handmade: Shifting Paradigms
26 August 1999- 10 October 1999

On display were works of international artists which showed their skill and understanding in the use of materials such as glass, ceramics, metal, wood and textiles to express their artistic ideas. The works stemmed from the production of objects that were created for utilitarian usage but transcended the realms of utility to that of artistic expressions.

Jointly curated by the Singapore Art Museum and the LaSalle-SIA College of the Arts, the exhibition presented a variety of new works including multi-media, installation and performances by 25 artists, all graduates of LaSalle-SIA College of the Arts.

Soul Ties: The Land & Her People

Drawing from the collection of the Singapore Art Museum and important private collections from Indonesia, this exhibition featured up to 80 works by Indonesian and European artists from the early moderns to the contemporary.

Monet to Moore: Millenium Gift of the Sara Lee Corporation
1 April 1999- 1 June 1999


The exhibition featured pieces from the Sara Lee Corporation collection based in Chicago put together by its founder, Nathan Cummings. The pieces were those by Monet, Piassaro, Gauguin, Morisot, Sisley, Toulouse-Lautrec, Degas, Braque, Maillol, Picasso, Matisse, Renoir, Soutine, Leger, Giacometti, Jean Arp, and Moore.

Power and Poetry: Monuments and Meditations in Chinese Ink Painting

The exhibition re-introduced the age-old traditional medium of Chinese ink painting by the fusion of Eastern philosophy (Chinese ink painting) and Western symbolism (abstract works of art) in the paintings of three contemporary artists.

Trimurti and Ten Years After

Featuring significant works of three important Singaporean contemporary artists, S. Chandrasekaran, Goh Ee Choo, and Salleh Japar. Created over the last 10 Years, this exhibition discussed the trends and tendencies in Singaporean contemporary art.

Wind of the Spirit: A Retrospective Exhibition of Brother Joseph McNally

The exhibition commemorated the conferment of the Meritorious Service Medal on Brother Joseph McNally's artistic development, one that is tightly knitted with nature and natural phenomenon.

Imaging Selves

Imaging Selves was the first show in the Singapore Art Museum Exhibition Series exploring notions of the identity and attitudes towards the human figure in 20th Century Southeast Asian Art.
