The Art of Woodcut -- An Introduction to the History of Woodcut in Singapore during the 1950s and 1960s

This talk introduces audiences to the history and development of woodcut in Singapore during the 1950s and 1960s. The background of woodcut practice in Singapore can be traced to the woodcut developments in Germany and China, and was used as a ‘weapon’ during the tumultuous 1950s. This was a period that witnessed student riots, the Malayan Emergence and the Anti-Yellow Culture Movement.

The speaker Mr. Tong Siang Eng is a long-time researcher of woodcut art in Singapore. He will be presenting an introductory lecture on the background of woodcut art, followed by a show of the tools and materials used in its practice.
