NAS’ Sound and Moving Image Laboratory (SMIL) is a technical lab dedicated to the preservation and care of audio and audio-visual archives that are taken into the custody of NAS. Our rich collection of audio-visual archives which dates back to the 1930s complements the traditional written record and forms an integral part of our nation’s collective memories. The SMIL is equipped with the technical and technological capabilities not only to perform restoration and repair of these audio-visual archives, but is also at the forefront of tackling preservation-related issues such as media and format migration, and media obsolescence.
