River Room
Asian Civilisations Museum

Guo Pei: Chinese Art and Couture was initiated because of Guo Pei’s and ACM’s shared passion for keeping Chinese art and heritage alive and relevant to today’s society. This conversation delves deeper into how the exhibition came about, and explores – by way of highlighting key masterworks in the exhibition – broader themes of Chinese art history, the hybrid nature of Chinese art and identity, Chinese wedding culture, and the place of fashion and couture in museums today.

About the exhibition
Guo Pei: Chinese Art and Couture presents a dialogue between historical and contemporary Chinese design, juxtaposing 29 embroidered masterworks by China’s foremost couturière with 20 Chinese artworks in the collection of the Asian Civilisations Museum. Guo Pei’s dramatic, sculptural gowns reflect influences from growing up in Beijing surrounded by Chinese imperial art and mythology. Her creations also express her personal take on contemporary fashion and aesthetics. Exploring her impact on everyday lives beyond the runway, the exhibition will present several of Guo Pei’s intricate Chinese bridal gowns – including two directly inspired by artworks in the ACM collection. Serving as points of encounter and departure, the ACM objects invite contemplation on how Guo Pei references and reimagines Chinese aesthetics and tradition for China and the world today.

About Guo Pei
Guo Pei is China’s preeminent couturière, recognised for the depth of craftsmanship, Chinese historical references, and beauty of her fantastical works. Almost two decades before Rihanna wore the now-iconic yellow cape to the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute Gala in 2015 (which introduced Guo Pei to an international audience), she was already the designer of choice for high society and the influential at home in China. In recent years, her Chinese bridal line has entered the mainstream, favoured by celebrities like Angelababy. Guo Pei, as an invited guest member, is the only Chinese fashion designer participating in the esteemed Chambre Syndicale de la Haute Couture; and she has been named one of TIME Magazine’s “100 Most Influential People”. Her works have been shown in museums worldwide, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the China National Silk Museum, the National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne, the Vancouver Art Gallery, and the SCAD FASH Museum of Fashion + Film in Atlanta.

The Asian Civilisations Museum presents Guo Pei in an exclusive, one-time only Conversation with ACM Director Kennie Ting. Seats are limited to 150.
