2015 was a significant year for both our nation and local heritage scene. We celebrated our nation’s jubilee anniversary and doubled our efforts to commemorate this special year through various heritage activities. We also saw an increased number of donors giving to heritage causes. This year we are honoured to pay tribute to 104 patrons, amongst which 63 are first-time donors. Their gifts to our museums and other heritage causes totalled $16 million in 2015.
In the past year, we have seen the revamp of the permanent galleries at the National Museum of Singapore and the Asian Civilisations Museum, made possible with the support of our donors. Exciting exhibitions have been held at our museums over the past year, such as the special exhibition, Treasures of the World from the British Museum at the National Museum of Singapore, which was a unique collaboration between our National Museum and the British Museum in London. We also introduced our newest initiative, HeritageCares, which offers cultural programmes to beneficiaries of the Community Chest. This programme enables any person, regardless of background, to engage with our shared heritage.
It is heart-warming to see our nation’s cultural philanthropy growing from strength to strength, reflecting a heightened awareness and deeper appreciation for the arts and heritage. Once again, I thank our patrons for their invaluable support, and look forward to working with all of you again in the coming years.
