Tracing the Roots of the Meteorological Service | A Librarian's World
Tucked away in a quiet corner in Changi Airport sits the headquarters of our national authority on weather and climate. Known as the Meteorological Service Singapore (MSS), this agency observes and studies Singapore’s weather patterns. It also supplies weather information and climate services to the public as well as the aviation and maritime communities. Unknown to many, the practice of weather observation has had a rather long history in Singapore, stretching back to the time when the British first arrived.
Librarian Lim Tin Seng retraces this less explored part of our history, uncovering the earliest weather observations made on the island, the establishment of the first dedicated Meteorological service during the colonial period, and the development of today’s MSS.
About the Speaker
Lim Tin Seng is a Librarian with the National Library of Singapore. He is also a regular contributor to the National Library’s flagship magazine BiblioAsia and has produced many research articles on urban planning, and the interactions between the environment and urban growth.
