This tag belonged to Lance Sergeant Anthony Bowden Newsom of the 8th Division Intelligence Section, 2nd Australian Imperial Force (AIF). The Japanese word on the tag can be translated to mean “Australia”, and was likely a method of identification used by the Japanese. Newsom’s serial number is crudely engraved on the tag, indicating that it was possibly carved by Newsom himself. Newsom would later help to found and run the Changi Library.
