Clemenceau is a symbol of resilience for French people as he led the nation during the First World War. After stepping down as President of Council, he went on a tour of Asia in 1920-21. The exhibition traces Clemenceau’s stop in Singapore – the anticipation of his arrival, the ceremony accorded to him, the people he met and the places he visited.
Clemenceau in Singapore

A focal point of the exhibition is the inauguration of Clemenceau Avenue which he attended. Clemenceau also witnessed the laying of the foundation stone of the Cenotaph, celebrating the victory of the WWI by the Allies at the Esplanade. Clemenceau’s well-documented visit captured a slice of Singapore’s social life 100 years ago.

Clemenceau also had a passion for Asian arts. The exhibition will feature a small selection of Asian art objects collected by Clemenceau which are now in the collection of Musée Clemenceau.

This exhibition is organised by the French Embassy in Singapore, under the vOilah! 2020 France Singapore Festival. The National Museum of Singapore is a venue supporter.
