Come dressed in your best red-and-white outfit and celebrate Singapore’s 57th birthday at the National Museum of Singapore with your family and friends! Admission to all galleries is free for all on 9 Aug.

You can look forward to an exciting line-up of programmes all happening on 9 Aug, from an outdoor playground for families in the morning to a National Day hunt in our galleries throughout the day; creating mementos based on Singapore’s icons in our drop-in activity stations and workshops, and lively music performances and storytelling sessions.

In the evening, gather with your family and friends for an outdoor live telecast of the National Day Parade, as images of past parades over the years are projected on the museum’s façade.

Don’t forget to tag us on social media when taking photos with #NationalDayatNMS

Kindly note that parkings lots are limited onsite and visitors are strongly encouraged to seek alternative parking arrangements around the vicinity.

    Live Telecast of National Day Parade

    Enjoy a live telecast of the National Day Parade under the museum’s iconic Banyan tree with your family and friends. Visitors may bring their own picnic mats.

    Please note that Vaccinated Differentiated SMMs (VDS) will apply for the live telecast of the National Day Parade. Visitors will be required to show their vaccination status before entering the site.

    Let’s Gotong Royong: Community Batik Painting and Batik Display

    Experience the gotong royong (community spirit) as we come together to paint a specially-designed batik piece that features Singapore’s symbols and national icons!

    Do look out for a unique batik piece on display, painted by close to 200 museum visitors during the museum’s Hari Raya edition of Let’s Gotong Royong back in May! Admire its beauty and see if you can spot a national icon hidden within this colourful artwork.

    National Day Scavenger Hunt @ NMS

    Register at the Seminar Room, Level 2. Hunt takes place in the permanent galleries


    Search for little-known aspects of Singapore in the museum’s galleries, and redeem a special National Day souvenir upon completing the hunt!

    Artist and Sustainability: Singapore Youth Festival (SYF) 2022 Art Exhibition

    10am – 6pm
    Canyon, Basement Level | Free

    Come learn, discover and be inspired as you immerse yourself in the vibrant artistic responses from our youth, in “Artist and Sustainability”, an exhibition that was presented for the SYF 2022. “Artist and Sustainability” invites students to consider how individual efforts and collective actions can positively impact the world we live in and benefit future generations. A selection of the exhibition will be displayed during National Day. This exhibition is held in collaboration with the Ministry of Education.

    Drop-in craft activities by Sengkang Green Primary School

    Visit this student-facilitated activity station where you can colour postcards designed by students and contribute your wishes for Singapore or learn to create a paper toy from scratch!

    This activity is on a first-come-first-serve basis and while stocks last. Recommended for participants ages 5 and above and all children must be accompanied by an adult. This programme is orgranised in collaboration with Sengkang Green Primary School
    Zen Patterns

    Drop-in Activity: Zen Art with Singapore Icons

    2pm – 4pm
    The Salon, Level 1 | Free

    Express your creativity with zen patterns. Choose between our iconic lion head symbol or national flower, Vanda Miss Joaquim and create your own unique piece of our Singapore icon. Limited spaces available. Drawing materials for this programme is supported by STAEDTLER. Each slot will be able to accommodate up to 30 pax on a first-come-first-serve basis.

    This programme is recommended for participants ages 8 and above and is supported by STAEDTLER.

    My Garden City: A Drawing Workshop by MessyMsxi

    The ‘garden city’ idea was introduced in 1967 with aims to transform Singapore into a city with clean environment and greenery. In this programme, we invite you to envision your hopes for Singapore’s natural landscape for future generations. You begin with an introduction with artist, MessyMsxi and thereafter, stroll through our Goh Seng Choo gallery to view Singapore’s natural history for inspiration before drawing and sharing your vision of our garden city.

    About the artist
    MessyMsxi is the moniker for artist, Tan Zi Xi, a London-trained Singaporean artist who believes that the truest form of works spring from moments of spontaneity and inspiration. Since graduating in 2009, she has carved a reputation as an illustrator and was voted “Best Illustrator 2010” by JUICE Magazine Singapore. She has since collaborated with graphic designers and fashion labels. In 2013, she won “Most Inspiring Award” by The Singapore Women’s Weekly that honours the achievements of the nation’s most inspiring women.

    Encounters with History: Soapbox Tours by Museum Docents

    Journey through 700 years of Singapore’s history with our knowledgeable and friendly docents in Encounters with History, and discover fascinating stories and significant events associated with the artefacts in our galleries! Look for our docents holding a special sign – there are 6 of them in our Singapore History Gallery so be sure to visit them all!

    Adventure Playground by Chapter Zero

    In this interactive activity, children are free to direct their own play and creations and have fun with everyday objects and “junk”. See how children's ideas interact with open-ended materials to transform a space into a pop-up adventure playground.

    About the facilitators

    Advocates of respectful caregiving and child-led play, the Chapter Zero team has been supporting the growth of the local mindful caregiving community since 2015.

    Be serenaded by the Silver Songbirds, a group of active seniors who are passionate about singing and theatre, as they perform a medley of classic National Day songs such as “Di Tanjong Katong” and “We Are Singapore”!

    In this music performance, groove to National Day songs by differently-abled talents from Inclusive Arts Movement (I.AM).

    I.AM aims to create an inclusive society through music and the arts by creating social awareness for differently-abled talents while providing them with a sustainable income. It offers these talents a platform for music performances and the performing arts, and promotes an inclusive atmosphere by uniting them through a common passion.

    Sustainable Food powered by a Sustainable Workforce

    In this sharing session, learn about sustainable food and how The Social Kitchen is committed to creating opportunities for people with special needs, before a food tasting session of light bites like nuggets and meatballs. About the Facilitators The Social Kitchen (TSK) aims to empower individuals from vulnerable communities through employment and integration. With a total of 8 outlets island-wide, part of TSK’s success depends on providing sustainable jobs to these vulnerable communities.

    In recent years, TSK has begun its journey to create awareness about sustainable food in an effort to be self-sustainable. Limited spaces available.     Merchants of Singapore: A Participatory Character Tour

    Throughout Singapore’s history, many have come to Singapore in search of business opportunities, a new life, or a brighter future.

    In this participatory character tour, we invite you to “travel” back in time where you will encounter two travellers from different backgrounds with a common goal.

    Limited spaces available. Visit https://ndoh22charactour.peatix.com to register now. This programme is suitable for all participants from ages 13 and above. Please note that this is a participatory tour where members of the audience will be invited to assume roles of historical figures.

    The characters presented are inspired by historical figures but creative direction and licenses have been taken to fit the storyline. Participants are reminded to keep their masks on throughout the programme.

    Family Time

    Visit our permanent galleries with your little ones and play spot-the-artefact! Our colourful Early Learning Resources introduce pre-schoolers to our artefacts according to the themes of Numbers, Colours, and ABCs. Available at $8 per set from the Museum Label shop.
