Changi prison door

1930s
Metal

This door was part of an original Changi prison cell that was meant for a single occupant. Each door had eye-level and knee-level spyholes for guards to observe prisoners, and the 597 cells were secured by an extensive alarm system. During the war, bedding was not provided, so internees typically slept on bare concrete in the cells.
