Heath Yeo and Jackie Sam will present their “Threads That Bind” fashion collection, inspired by the colourful Peranakan heritage for the first time at the museum. The meaningful embroidered motifs can also be found on the fukusa in the special exhibition, Fukusa: Japanese Gift Covers from the Chris Hall Collection.

Sashiko Stitching Workshop

Learn the basics of sashiko stitching, a traditional Japanese embroidery technique. It uses special sashiko thread and needle to reinforce points of wear and to repair tears with patches. This stitch can also be used for decorative purposes in quilting and embroidery projects.

This workshop is suitable for ages 16 and above due to its complexity. Please note that if you do not meet the age requirement, you may be turned away at the door and refunds will not be issued.

Orizomegami Japanese Fold and Dye Workshop

Explore orizomegami, a Japanese art technique of dipping folded papers into dyes to create stunning pieces of art reminiscent of stained-glass windows. In this workshop, you will discover how no two pieces of orizomegami created will be the same.

Drop-in Craft: Cross-stitch a Mini Fukusa

Explore the special exhibition Fukusa: Japanese Gift Covers from the Chris Hall Collection or the Fashion and Decorative Textiles Galleries and be inspired by the various embroidered motifs on display. Choose a motif that resonates with you, then cross-stitch your own mini fukusa.

Demonstration: The Sulam Makers

Get up close with Heath Yeo and Jackie Sam, traditional Peranakan sulam (embroidery) makers in this session where they will be doing a demonstration of their craft by hand and manual sewing machine, share all about its techniques, materials, and their personal stories about the craft.

About Heath Yeo

Heath is a Fashion Design graduate from LASALLE College of the Arts. He trained with a famed kebaya maker in Singapore and inherited the skills of sulam (embroidery). As an artisan-designer, Heath oversees every aspect of the creation process and ensures that every bespoke work is unique. He adopts the “One Machine, One Stitch, One Man” commitment to craftsmanship.

About Jackie Sam

Jackie Sam’s masterpieces of embroidery and beadwork showcase delicate needlework. Made with brittle vintage beads and extremely fine needles, her creations have been presented to former President Halimah Yacob. It was also displayed at the Peranakan Museum’s special exhibition, Nyonya Needlework (2016).

Tour: Embroidery Stitches and Motifs

Join the museum guide on this special tour focusing on the beautiful embroidery pieces on display in the galleries. Spot the various types of embroidery stitches and techniques used, learn the meaning of the motifs, and discover the function of the different textiles.
