British army entrenching set

Slit trenches were dug in defensive positions to help protect soldiers from shrapnel and enemy fire. This set of entrenching tools was issued to all non-commissioned infantry soldiers. It consists of a cast-iron head with a shovel end and pick end; a handle that slots into the hole of the head; and a webbing cover with loops and buckles for securing the handle. Apart from digging, it was also used as a combat weapon.
