Asian Civilisations Museum

Entrance into Joseon Korea

Intrigued by sets and costumes from Korean historical dramas and films? Then you will want to see actual furniture, fashion, and decorative arts from Korea’s Joseon era (1392–1897). Spanning some 500 years, Joseon was Korea’s last dynasty, and the legacy of its courtly culture and vibrant city life lives on in South Korea today. Treasures from the National Museum of Korea, the National Palace Museum of Korea, and the Deagu National Museum will be displayed for the first time in Singapore.

The exhibition will be accompanied by programmes and talks relating to Joseon Korea and contemporary Korean culture; as well as Becoming Again; Coming Together a contemporary installation inspired by Joseon Korea, by South Korean contemporary artist Ran Hwang. She is best known for create large-scale installations using pins, buttons, and threads. Becoming Again; Coming Together located on level 1 of the museum, and is free admission for all visitors.

As shared during the Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth’s Committee of Supply Debate 2016, Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) and their primary caregivers will be offered free or subsidised admission fees to all NHB museums and heritage institutions. Fact or fiction – was Joseon Korea really like what you see in dramas and movies? Join exhibition curators Kan Shuyi and Dominic Low as they unravel the truth and get exclusive behind-the-scenes insights into Korean history.

A minimum of 15 people is needed to proceed. Payment must be made at Front Desk or Peatix in advance. Registration closes a day before each tour.

Interpretive space for Joseon Korea

Programming Space, Joseon Korea Exhibition

Send your wishes for protection of your treasured ones on the colourful community pojagi (Korean wrapping cloth). Go on a trail as a Joseon scholar while you explore the exhibition with our activity booklet, and create your own scholar’s hat like the ones you see in K-dramas. Learn about the origins of world’s most incredible alphabet, Hangeul, and pick up a Korean word or two.

Saranghaeyo, Korea! Join us for heart thumping music and dance performances, tasting sessions of delicious Korean food, and a mass taekwondo workout. Don’t forget to say Annyeonghasaeyo to the new special exhibition, Joseon Korea: Court Treasures and City Life, before you end your day!
